Department of Horticulture

The department incorporating disciplines such as Horticulture, Food Science & Nutrition, focuses on the cultivation of a diverse array of horticultural crops including fruits, vegetables, flowers, and medicinal plants. Employing advanced technologies such as poly houses, shade nets, and mist chambers, the department emphasizes high-tech production techniques to optimize crop yield and quality.

A key initiative of the department is the establishment of a commercial nursery to fulfill on-campus requirements for establishing gardens and landscapes. This nursery serves as a practical learning environment where students gain hands-on experience in nursery management practices, including seedling propagation, grafting, and plant care.

To enrich students’ learning experiences, an orchard has been established featuring a variety of fruit crops. This orchard serves as a living laboratory where students observe the growth and development of different fruit varieties firsthand, enhancing their understanding of horticultural principles and practices.

In addition to crop production, the department integrates food processing techniques into the course curriculum. Students learn about post-harvest handling, preservation, and value-added processing methods, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to add further value to horticultural produce.

By embracing innovation and practical learning approaches, the Horticulture department strives to prepare students for careers in various aspects of horticulture, food science, and nutrition. Through hands-on experiences and interdisciplinary education, students are empowered to contribute to the sustainable production, processing, and utilization of horticultural crops for the benefit of society.
